My Miata has an irritating chirp when idling, which I’m mostly kind of sure is coming from the idler pulley. I don’t have a torque wrench, but internet s say it needs to be torqued to about 22lbs. I don’t think I should just buy the cheapest thing on amazon, but also, I want to buy the cheapest wrench possible.

Made by Western Forge. No moving parts to break, never needs to be reset to zero after use.

I didn't know you had a Miata

I have that one too. It’s a good wrench , as long as you are in a position to watch the pointer while torquing. For harder-to-reach fasteners, you many want to use a ratcheting click-type wrench instead.

Harbor Freight wrenches have been surprisingly accurate when tested by several magazines. Here’s Hot Rod’s test:

Take home message: always zero out the wrench after use.

You could buy a cheaper (but not bad) wrench and then have it calibrated.

No need for a torque wrench for that. It’s not a part that’s super sensitive to torque like an engine head. Just use a regular 3/8 and good-n-snug as the setting when you replace it.

If you can wait, get the Summitt one that Atfsgeoff recommended. If not, the HF $20 is pretty good. My only complaint is that the click indicator can be reeeeally soft so you have to use your spidey-sense. But for only $5 more than HF the Summitt one is good.

C heck your local list of Craig for a used split beam torque wrench from Precision Instruments or relabeled as Snap-On. I picked up my 1/2" drive for small money from a guy who was retiring from the mechanic game.

I have one of these and it’s great higher torque settings. I don’t trust it at the lower end tho.

It’s a relatively new addition.

That’s a good point, since these are pretty low.

It’s always a good idea to use a torque wrench in its middle 50% range, 22 ft lbs is enough that I’d trust its accuracy there. Less than 10 ft lbs would be iffy.

22 ft-lbs isn’t that low I had issues around 5 ft-lbs and broke a bolt that should not have broken.

Where could I get it calibrated?

That makes sense. All of the Miata forum things I’ve seen have noted the torque specs, but I never bothered with my Town Car. I’m just slightly more neuorotic about being by the book since it’s a newer car.

I broke a bolt trying to get to 5 ft-lbs so after that my trust was not there.

Capri from Amazon. Mine has worked very well for me and was accurate against a calibrated Snap On.

Really? I’m pretty sure I bought trim removers from them, but that’s not exactly something that requires good calibration. Thanks!

Yeah 5 ft lbs, you should be using a 1/4" drive torque wrench that measures in inch-lbs (5 ft-lbs =
60 in-lbs).

They make smaller ones too, obviously.

You’d want to check places near you.... most tool stores must have some where they get these repaired.

Gütentight with a 6 "ish 3/8 ratchet is fine.
The only bolts I ever torque are wheels, stretch to yield, and gaskets.
